Part 1: Preliminaries

·  Jon Sprow
LONG MESSAGE IM SORRY. D&D RELATED!
Hey! So, I think I have my group of players nailed down to you five. Tremendous! This is going to be my first attempt at running a game completely online, as well as the first game I run using the Dungeon Crawl Classics ruleset. As such, its a little experimental in nature, and though some hiccups may arise, it should be a pretty cool time!
HOW IT WORKS: Each of you guys is going to start off controlling a handful of characters. I'll be providing narration and setting the stage for you. As you explore, you're free to narrate what each of your characters does in those situations, as well as any dialogue, either with an NPC or with other characters in the group. I'll do my best to respond to any of these actions with a natural reaction. In combat, there will be a loose order to things, where characters with especially high initiative will have their actions take place before others, and things will take place in turns. However, even then, you're still free to do whatever you like.
Outside of the initial character creation process, I will be making all of the random die rolls in the game, which is a large change from the tabletop game. These rolls and their outcomes will be completely objective and NEVER fudged. Just as I will never go out of my way to protect a character, I also have no desire to kill them for sport.
One other caveat is that there may be times when a lot of these messages pop up while you weren't looking, or within a short period of time. I ask that you not be overwhelmed or put off by the game continuing in your absence: in fact, its part of what makes this more convenient. If you ever get confused by anything, just let me know, either in this box, in a private message, or by text, and I'll clear it up for you.
THE GAME: Dungeon Crawl Classics is an excellent variation on the Dungeons & Dragons game. What Pathfinder is 3rd Edition D&D, DCC is to 1st edition. This is old school 70s RPGing at its best: simple but still crunchy, fantastic and foreboding in equal measure, with danger around every turn and in places you don't expect. However, because it is based mainly upon a game from the 70s, there are several ways DCC differs from how you might know D&D today.
Conversation started February 21 Jon Sprow 2/21, 6:38pm Jon Sprow
Hello! I'm starting up an online D&D game (done through FB chat), and I was wondering if you or Justin would perhaps want in? February 21 Jen Leins 2/21, 11:27pm Jen Leins
I'd be willing to give it a go! Jon Sprow 2/22, 1:44am Jon Sprow
Fantastic!
Full discretion: this is me trying a system I've recently gotten into, Dungeon Crawl Classics, that is essentially a modern update of the original 70's D&D rules. It's a really elegant game, and some of the flavor and mechanics are downright beautiful. However, because its based on old-school-as-fuck D&D, there are some ways it might differ from how you know the game.
-Characters are COMPLETELY randomly generated, from the stats to their former occupations. The idea is that your character's origins are more or less meaningless, for heroes are not born, but made by their actions. This limits the initial customization/optimization process compared to other D&D games. However, that isn't as much of a problem because...
-Everybody starts at level 0, essentially as a group of frightened peasants fighting out of necessity with whatever crappy excuses for weapons they have. A farmer might have a pitchfork and a live sheep, while a minstrel might have a dagger and a ukelele. Despite these humble origins, you may rise as a great hero. Or not, because...
-The game doesn't really care if you die. The game as a whole is much more lethal than modern versions of D&D, particularly in the beginning, when you're a band of unarmored country folk with 1-5hp. When you can die in one or two hits, or from one or two simple mistakes, you have to weigh caution with valor and always keep your wits about you to survive. This is balanced out, though, by the fact that...
-Each player will start with 3 characters. Each one will be unique and yours to play however you want, in the hopes that by the end of the first adventure, one or more of them will have survived to level 1, and can become a fighter, mage, etc (and if all of them die, we'll just roll up another!)
IN CONCLUSION If this still sounds like a game you'd be super into playing, now is the time for you to create your characters! I'll do most of the heavy lifting on this one: what I'll need you guys to do is roll some dice. Specifically, roll 3d6 for me twenty times, and d100 (the d10 plus the percentile die) three times. Be sure to give me the list of numbers in EXACTLY THE ORDER that you rolled them. Once I have that data, I'll compile it into your characters, whom you can name and give as much or as little backstory or flavor as you like! If you dont have dice handy, here's an online version! http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm
If this seems like a lot, or not your bag, you're free to bow out. Otherwise, good luck, and godspeed!

If you trust me to have only used excell to make this easier on myself, here are my rolls. If you further trust others to press f9 without looking, then screenshot their results as I have, then I can also provide a file to automate these rolls.
·  David Juenemann
3/1, 1:22pm
If you think that it takes away from the spirit of this portion of the game, I can reroll with real dice.

Yes. Press f9 and it randomizes them again
·  Kirsten Renas

I haven't pressed anything yet, wasn't sure if I was supposed to. So I press f9 now, ja?
Is that to make sure it's absolutely def randomized?

Tbh, the one you wanted to roll high on was the D6s. The d100s determine your occupations, which are listed alphabetically. So that 100 is probably whatever starts with W

You are now free to make them your own! Anything not defined by those little stat blocks are yours to define: name, age, gender, and personality traits (of course, you can take hints from scores like intelligence and personality, or even your birth augur under your luck score, but you're just as free to ignore them).
·  Kirsten Renas
3:02pm
POOPSMITH sorry I got excited that we have a poopsmith in our party
Since it's a pain to search through old facebook messages, I'll be periodically saving them to word documents (maybe PDFs?) and uploading them to a blog somewhere. This way it'll be easier to find stuff that happened a while ago
·  Jon Sprow
3/3, 3:31pm
Oh! Yes, I definitely reccommend you guys AT LEAST save your character stat blocks to a notepad/word doc, for easy reference.
·  David Juenemann
3/3, 3:31pm
I'll probably get a prelim document together and then start uploading them at 1 week intervals once we get started (depending on whether that makes sense to do)
·  Brian Arnold

Yes, I'm a poop farmer. But you know what? Luke freaking Skywalker was a boring ass moisture farmer.

·  Jon Sprow
3/3, 10:39pm
I mean you can do that at your own pace. All we really need to start the adventure are names and maybe genders
·  Mike Sarowski
3/3, 10:39pm
Right so I'm ready when everyone else is

I'll get back to you on races once I've had more time to look at all of them
·  Kirsten Renas
3/5, 9:01pm
any limit on what races?
·  Jon Sprow
https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/y4/r/-PAXP-deijE.gif3/5, 9:03pm
They're all human. The only people with nonhuman races are Dave's Halfling and Jen's dwarf. Demihuman races in old D&D were treated as classes, so instead of eventually being a cleric, wizard, warrior, or thief, they'll be a halfling/dwarf
·  Kirsten Renas
3/5, 9:03pm
Ok that's what I thought. Thanks
·  Jen Leins
3/5, 9:08pm
Hunter: Ayumi [female] Dwarven Ratcatcher: Dolnar [male] Woodcutter: Jolim [male] (i'm assuming i get to choose their gender and appearance and everything?!)

3/5, 9:08pm
Yes to all of those

cool. i will be elaborating a lot on them then, But there is my jumping off point
·  Mike Sarowski
https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/y4/r/-PAXP-deijE.gif3/5, 9:10pm
Rynard (male) Zim (male) Shunuk (female)
·  Kirsten Renas
3/5, 9:15pm
Farmer: Nesta Hardbottle (female, 15-y-o). She calls her goose "Sister," (since her entire family died in the famine) but says its actual name doesn't translate well into common tongue. Woodcutter: Bronwyn (female, 24, no known surname). I'd tell you her little backstory but time, space, importance, whatever. There's a silly/sad reason she has a 10-foot-pole. Barber: Elgar Telemann (male, 31) has thinning hair, quick fingers, and a punchable face.
·  Kirsten Renas
3/5, 9:16pm
There I go doing too much.

BACKSTORY
Nino, a lady halfling haberdasher, has dedicated her life to dressing those of influence well. She knows her place as a haberdasher. She'll bow the lowest of them all to show proper respect where it is due, and even on the first meeting, one must admire her commitment to her trade and the arts. Truly charming, Nino provides excellent work, and when she comes to a new town, her reputation for astonishing service and quality seaming spreads like wildfire.
Harken, the deft, exemplifies the best traits of an artisan. Where others see the sun setting, Harken sees a brilliance that makes his heart sing. He specializes in finding the best in people, and commiting it to either a page in his sketchbook or perhaps a painting or statuette. All of his work comes with his endlessly sunny attitude, his sponsors are unanimously impressed by his depictions of them (even his pictures are optimistic, with each subject seeming a shade more pleasant on paper than in the flesh). As an artiste, Harken, the deft, loves mingling in the gardens of the well-to-do, and draws energy from the life and vibrance he finds in the company of the affluent. Being an artisan, Harken moves around a lot.
Nils, an indentured servant, is frail. His life has been hard, as he's always been the runt in any group. He tries his best and works hard. He has been frail his whole life, a poor trait for a servant.
Nils has worked for Nino and her family since his birth, and shows his respect for her through hard work and dedication. She reciprocates by providing him with the proper respect for a servant-providing him with enough work to keep him busy. Though Nino doesn't go easy on him, it's clear that she cares about Nils and his well-being.

Nesta Hardbottle Skinny 15-year-old girl. Nesta’s mother died during the famine one year ago; her father and brother left to find sustenance a month before then after Nesta refused to let them eat her pet goose. Calls the goose “Sister,” says that she knows its name but it doesn’t translate well to common tongue. She frequently talks to Sister, speaking of her family. It’s ambiguous whether Nesta actually can communicate with the goose. She makes her way in the world by selling eggs that Sister lays. Nesta still lives on her family’s now run-down, overgrown patch of land.
Bronwyn 24-y-o woman, fairly stocky. Was engaged to another woodcutter at 17, but upon being struck by lightning, her fiancée dumped her for her damaged looks. His last words to her were “I wouldn’t touch you with a 6-foot pole.” Fortunately there was a 10-foot pole nearby, so she grabbed that and smashed his teeth in. Bronwyn’s scars have mostly faded by now, though she has some trust issues. She lives alone. She’s not a very good woodcutter.
Elgar Telemann Tall, wiry 31-y-o man with thinning hair, quick fingers, and a punchable, punchable face. He makes a decent living shaving the faces and trimming the heads of people in town. Elgar is a pleasant enough fellow, though sometimes he smiles a bit too wide. One day, upon receiving an excellent shave, a local barkeep offered Elgar the first taste of a brand new keg of beer. Elgar took a swig, and nearly died as the keg was laced with arsenic meant for the barkeep. Fortune laughs in the face of Elgar Telemann. Unfortunately, so does Bronwyn, the woman to whom he is oddly drawn.

O’Syrus Dungsmith
25 years old.
Born in the gutter, raised in the gutter, works in the gutter. Life has shit all over him, quite literally, so nothing surprises him anymore. Despite his terrible working conditions, he’s a hard, honest worker whose word is his bond. He knows almost nothing about his family. He never knew his father, and his mother died penniless and alone in the street long ago. He is determined to make more of himself than the feeble hand life has dealt him.
Allyn Delon-Ra
67 years old.
Farmer, from a long line of farmers. Tradition has the first born males from his family carry on the tradition of running the family farm. They provide most of the food for their small village, growing everything from wheat, to corn, to potatoes, etc. He handed over the reins to his son a long time ago, but has increasingly been feeling like something is missing in his life.
Kae’la Delon-Ra
17 years old
Granddaughter of Allyn. Her uncle runs the family farm, and her father tends to the horses. Her father has been teaching her everything he knows as an ostler. She’s become quite good with the animals herself, having an almost supernatural intuition with them. She loves her grandfather, feeling connected to him more than anyone else in the family. She’d do anything to help him, or keep him safe. In her free time, she’s been known to gamble more money than she has, on more than one occasion.
